Heads-up Ski Display from Recon

November 25, 2013 By Dan Rosenbaum

reconFrequent readers will recall the Oakley ski goggles from last month. Turns out you can buy the technology without the goggle — and put it into the goggle of your choice.

Recon Instruments sells the Snow2 Android-based insert. Onboard sensors measure your speed descent, distance, and so on; it’ll interface with heart monitors and cameras, and allow Bluetooth 4.0 connections with popular cell phones to display incoming calls and texts. (What could possibly go wrong?) The display sits in the bottom right corner of your right lens; Recon claims it keeps peripheral vision clear and only takes 6 degrees of visibility. Ski instructors tell us you shouldn’t be looking at your feet anyway.

A large remote, complete with big buttons, straps onto your arm. There are smartphone and desktop apps, and an available SDK for developers.

The gear costs $399 plus specially designed Recon-ready goggle.
