There’s a nice interview in The Verge with Jim Wicks, the design chief on the upcoming Moto360 smartwatch, the flagship hardware of the Android Wear OS. (Remember: none of this — hardware or software — will ship for months.) The team, of course, had a lot of choices: mimic smartwatches that already existed, re-invent the idea of timepieces, or something else. They decided to just make something that looked like a watch, although one with significantly enhanced functionality.
In the process, Wicks sounds like he was thinking like Steve Jobs:
“The normal thing to do is take the technology that exists,” he says, “and create something based on what you technically can do. We took a different approach, and said, ‘Okay what do we think this should be?’ Then we figured out how we could achieve it.”
Based on just that mindset, we’re looking forward to getting one of these in our hands.
