A Long-Form Inside Look at Disney’s MagicBand Project

April 20, 2015 By Dan Rosenbaum

mickey_mouse_face disneyDisney, like any company that adapts and rebuilds reality, is a famously controlling place with a frequently difficult culture. So the high-stakes project to re-engineer theme parks with the wearable MagicBand was even more full of internally corporate competition than it might have been at a “normal” company.

FastCompany has an exhaustive and exhausting blow-by-blow of how it all happened. It’ll take a while to read, and you’ll marvel at the corporate politics that the project had to overcome — particularly between the old-school Imagineers and the New Kids of what’s called NGE. The result is that a lot of the MyMagic+ project still hasn’t borne fruit, but what’s there works as well as anyone could hope.

This excellent article acts as a case study of fundamental cultural change, of a massive IT project, and as a use case for wearables. Spend some time with it; you won’t be sorry.
