Xiaomi’s CEO Announces Launch for Mi Band 2 — in China

June 2, 2016 By Pugi Kohl

Xiomi Mi Band 2It’s a good news, bad news kind of thing. Good news is that the Mi Band 2 fitness tracker will be available with an LED screen to consumers June 7, according to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun. Bad news is that it will be available only to Chinese consumers. However, other Xiaomi products have launched China-only and were seen in other markets within months of the Chinese launch. The original Mi Band is now for sale outside China and the Mi Band Pulse, while not officially on sale except in China, is available on Amazon.

Even with market restrictions, IDC analysts put Xiaomi second only to Fitbit in wearable tech global market share for the first quarter of 2016. The question is whether Xiaomi can make as big a splash when it enters the U.S. market officially. Their price point seems to indicate yes–$23.99 for that unofficial Mi Band Pulse on Amazon.
