Google today launched a new company called Calico, with a minor mission to extend human life. (Sorry, no link to the company.) It’s headed by Art Levinson, who also chairs the boards of Apple and Genentech,so you know there’s not a great deal of grass growing under his feet.
In his announcement, made in a charmingly old-fashioned manner through an interview with Time magazine, Google chair Larry Page didn’t say anything about Calico’s products or research or plans or much of anything. (Levinson is staying with Apple and Genetech) Given Levinson’s background, it’s not unrealistic to think that Calico will be focusing more on the genetic and biomed ends of anti-aging rather than the gadget business that we focus on here.
But, you know, it’s Google, Apple, Genentech, and Levinson. Something interesting is bound to happen, don’t you think?
