So you know how “everybody” is saying that the Apple Watch is too expensive at $349 to $1100? (Yes, we’re ignoring the $10,000 gold model.) TAG Heuer execs says its smart watch, which will run Android Wear, will go on sale in November for $1400.
The chief differentiator, other than the operating system, is that the TAG Heuer watch promises a 40-hour battery life, rather than the 18 hours promised by Apple.
After initial reluctance to enter the smart watch market, Swiss watchmakers are placing their bets, not wanting to lose the market to a bunch of punks from California. Their chief playing card seems to be quality and the appeal of Swiss timepieces. From Bloomberg:
“I hope they sell millions and millions and millions of them,” [LMVH CEO Jean-Claude] Biver said [of Apple]…. “The more they sell the more a few people will want something different and come to TAG Heuer.”
