Lumo Runs the Numbers

October 21, 2015 By Pugi Kohl

lumo_run_sensorAll runners, amateur or pro, want to get better every time they run and avoid injury. That’s one of the reasons coaches keep stats and why fitness tracking devices are so popular. Lumo now makes it even easier—and quite possibly more accurate—by putting all the electronics in your running shorts.

Lumo Run running shorts are the result of Lumo teaming up with sports biomechanics experts at Loughborough University, UK. The shorts use a waterproof, washable nine-axis sensor that slips into the waistband, and lasts up to a month on a single charge. It tracks key biomechanical measures, such as ground strike, stride and pelvic rotation. And with earphones, you can get real-time coaching in addition to the post-run info via your smartphone.

You don’t need to remember bands or goggles—just your shorts or, if female, your capris. (And when’s the last time you forgot clothes?) The shorts will run you around $149, the capris, $169. Might be pricey for shorts, but it’s a lot less expensive than hiring a coach.
