Jawbone Lays Off 15 Pct of Staff, Closes NY Office, in “Streamlining”

November 20, 2015 By Dan Rosenbaum

UP4 jawboneJawbone, the fitness tracer/speaker/headset company, has reportedly laid off 60 people — 15 percent of its staff — in a general “streamlining of its business. The cuts came across the entire company, Techcrunch reports, and were not aimed at any particular part of the company or product.

As part of the cutbacks, Jawbone closed its New York office, which was devoted to marketing.

Jawbone’s UP tracker was recently named one of Oprah’s “Favorite Things,” which is a nice publicity bump but does not come cheap; also, Oprah is not the marketing power she once was. The UP tracker is currently about the 7th-best-selling fitness band, and is outsold by Fitbit by about 8 to 1.
