UK-based mobile tech company Mobetrics has received funding to take wearables where none has gone before: into the world of nuclear decommissioning.
Second Sight will give workers a real-time view of radiation doses, suit temperatures, and heart rates, as well as technical information and assistance. This, in turn, raises the safety level of the operation, providing up-to-the-minute data to help in decision-making. The system uses Google Glass for message and data streaming.
“By offering a real-time view of health data such as heart rate and temperature in conjunction with radiation dose readings, user health can be effectively monitored during stressful operations,” Mobetric co-founder Marc Morrison said in an article on LinkedIn. “Furthermore, live image streaming of the users view (via Google Glass) and a visual messaging system deliver active team support and decision-making aids.”
We can all applaud reducing the amount of nuclear material in the world, while recognizing that those who do the actual decommissioning need all the help they can get.
