In the latest sign of consolidation in the wearables market, Mattel, the toy giant that’s home to Barbie and Hot Wheels, has bought Sproutling, the wearable baby monitor company.
Sproutling makes an ankle bracelet that tracks a baby’s heart rate, skin temperature, motion, and position; it works with a camera, base station and app.
Price was not announced, but the Silicon Valley Business Journal said that Sproutling, founded in 2012, had raised $6.5 million before being acquired. The device had been available only on the company’s web site, but a “preview launch” of an unknown number of units in the middle of last year had been sold out.
