Hyundai’s “Iron Man” Suit: Sci Fi Without the Fi

May 24, 2016 By Pugi Kohl

-Hyundai-Wearable-Robot-06Hyundai has announced—in Korean, on its Korean website—that it is working on an exoskeleton suit that it compares to Iron Man, and that is identical to Lt. Bill Cage (Tom Cruise) in Edge of Tomorrow.

The exoskeleton is an upgrade of Hyundai’s lighter weight H-LEX (Hyundai Lifecaring ExoSkeleton) that was designed to assist seniors and disabled people with mobility problems. (Personally, we think it looks like a slimline version of Ripley’s outfit when she takes on outraged — spoiler alert — maternal fury at the end of “Aliens.”)

Like the Ripley ensemble, the Hyundai suit is intended to help factory and other workers whose jobs require them to pick up and move heavy loads work more safely — even carrying those loads up stairs or over long distances. There are obviously military uses as well. The website mentions lifting cars, but given the reliability level of Google Translate, we aren’t willing to stand by that claim.

The suit exists only as a prototype at present, and in a lot of intriguing pictures.
