Fitbit Promises New Trackers This Year, Probably Including NFC

August 3, 2016 By Dan Rosenbaum

fitbit altaWhen Fitbit announced its quarterly results yesterday, CEO James Park said that the company would announce “more new products for this holiday season that we’ve ever had before.” Given the company’s iffy record of making holiday ship dates, that may translate to “two or three.”

The top of the company’s line are the Charge HR, the Surge, and the Blaze. The Blaze was announced earlier this year at CES, and the Surge missed the holiday season in 2014. There was a rumor last year that Fitbit had built significant numbers of a tracker with an NFC chip built in, but an engineering flaw forced them to scrap it.

In the interim, Fibit bought the technology to the failed Coin credit card substitute, so our bet is that we’ll see updated Blazes, Surges, and Altas with payment chips — and possibly updated colors. We may also see the Charge HR get an NFC bump, although the materials and size may make putting an NFC antenna difficult into the Charge line.
