Afterguard Uses Recon Display for Yacht Racing

April 8, 2014 By Dan Rosenbaum

Afterguard-productNot being besties with Larry Ellison, we at Wearable Tech Insider don’t claim to be the world’s living experts on big-dollar yachting. But it’s worth noting that Afterguard has a new yachting HUD based on Recon Instruments technology.

Where ski goggles that use Recon displays put the display inside the glass, Afterguard’s puts it outside. It’s not unlike Google Glass, although Afterguard’s display is on the lower right of the field of vision, rather than the upper right. The Afterguard has a module that gathers information from a boat’s existing instrumentation (heading, windspeed, location, tactical data and so forth) and other sensors, and send it wirelessly to the HUD.

Maybe it’s because the Afterguard uses dark tinted lenses, but it doesn’t look nearly as dorky as Google Glass. If you get a set for your yacht and someone complains how you look in them, though, you could always hit them with your wallet. Or just toss them overboard. Whatever works.

Like anything involving a boat, the Afterguard isn’t cheap. Pre-order price is $1900, and the web site says, at this writing, that there are only 458 systems left. If there are any available after anticipated Fall 2014 shipping, they’ll be $2500.
