Spire Breath Monitor Opens for Pre-Orders

June 18, 2014 By Dan Rosenbaum

spire-wearableThe Spire breath monitor is a belt-clip or bra-clip device that claims to not just track steps and movement, but breath and breathing patterns. Early sales have started.

Any yoga devotee can tell you that the quality of your breathing is both a good indicator of your state of mind and your health — and has a direct affect on them. Whether you believe that or not, it’s an interesting idea, made more credible by what the device doesn’t claim. It doesn’t claim to track caloric spend, for instance, or heart rate. The health claims are explicitly minimal, which is frankly a breath of fresh air (so to speak).

Some of the technology is interesting, too. The Spire claims a 7-day battery life, and it uses wireless charging through Qi-standard charging pads. Spire’s first app will run on iOS 7; an Android app is promised, but given how long it took Nike, don’t hold your breath.

Price: $119. Expecting shipping: September 2014.
