Fitbit Doesn’t Plan to Play with Apple HealthKit

October 10, 2014 By Dan Rosenbaum

forceFitbit is the world leader in fitness trackers, and does not appear to be especially interested in being part of the Apple HealthKit ecosystem.

As our sister publication Health Tech Insider writes, Fitbit posted yesterday on its support forum that there are no plans to integrate with HealthKit. That’s another piece of not-so-great news for Apple, which has had a rocky start with HealthKit since it launched a few weeks ago with iOS8. Fitbit, after all, is a leader in the tracker market; Apple is unproven.

Maybe, in this emerging world of wearables ecosystems, what will happen is that the bigger players will maintain their own environments, while licensing APIs to smaller players — like Misfit and Pebble. And Apple will be a common denominator for the commodity part of the business, which is probably not what Apple had in mind.

But stay tuned, because this is a fight that’s only just getting started.
