Throwing Your Money into the Ring

October 9, 2015 By Pugi Kohl

Kerv Payment RingsLondon-based startup Kerv is Kickstarting its smart ring into the contactless payment arena, as Europe prepares to go completely contactless by 2020. Although the U.S. is well behind in new payment technology, the Kerv ring is expected to be available—and work—in both markets. It just might take longer for the U.S. to come up to speed.

The Kerv ring design is slick and classy, made of dental ceramic, and comes in black or white. It’s a simple band that isn’t going to argue with other bling or clothing. The ceramic material won’t scratch and is hypo-allergenic. The ring is waterproof; you can jump in the pool with no worries. You won’t have to charge the ring or pair it to another device, such as a smart phone.

And it’s not linked to your bank account. A user will set up an account with Kerv and merchants will pay Kerv a small fee each time it is used. You won’t need a card, PIN, bank account, or smartphone. It will be accepted anywhere that accepts Mastercard, with a spending limit of £30 ($46).

The Kerv will be accepted for all London’s public transportation, a feature that should make it a hit on Kerv’s home turf. It seems to have a lot going for it—looks, convenience, efficiency. And particularly useful for nudists and for fashionistas who don’t want to spoil the line of their jackets and ensembles.
