Control Your GoPro With Your Ski Goggles

December 7, 2015 By Dan Rosenbaum

Recon GoPro remoteWe’re told that the snow is starting to fly (here at WTI‘s nerve center in Brooklyn, it’s been 50 degrees in December, so we’ll take people’s word for that), and that means people’s thoughts are turning to skiing and ski gear. Recon Instruments, the Intel company that makes heads-up displays for ski goggles, has a new app that lets you control your GoPro Hero camera — including monitoring what it’s seeing — with your Recon remote.

The idea certainly makes sense. Higher-end GoPro cameras are designed to be remote controllable, and their buttons are a bit fussy to be handled with ski gloves on. Also, it’d be nice to see whether the lens is pointed in the right direction or is covered with slush before you jump off that cornice. Risking your life is one thing; risking your life and missing the shot at the same time would be unbearable. The remote for the Recon Snow2, which is available by itself or already built into the Oakley Airwave 1.5 goggle, is designed to work with ski gloves.

The Snow2 display can also show real-time descent and jump data, locate your friends on the slopes, display a trail map, and tell you when you’ve gotten a text message. That strikes us as a lot of things to be watching at the same time, but maybe we’re not in the spirit of things.
