MediaTek Debuts SiP Tailored for Wristware: CES Day -2

January 4, 2016 By Dan Rosenbaum

MediaTek_logoThe semiconductor company MediaTek is kicking off CES with a new system-in-package for wrist-worn wearables, including GPS, Bluetooth Low Energy, and support for 320×320 MIPI displays.

Finbarr Moynihan, MediaTek’s general manager of corporate sales, told Wearable Tech Insider that the MT2523 series is based on a Cortex M4 with 4MB RAM and 4MB flash memory. “This would probably fit a Fitbit or Pebble, but not [an] Android Wear” device, which more typically would be based on a Cortex A4 core.

“The main advantage [of the package] is integration, processing, power management, connectivity, memory, and display management,” he said.

The chip comes in two versions: MT2523D (without GPS) is 6.2 mm x 5.8 mm. The GNSS GPS version is the MT2523G, and is 9.2 mm x 6 mm.

MediaTek sells about 350 to 400 million chips a year, mostly in smartphones, digital TVs, set-top boxes, and WiFi radios.
