Thalmic Labs, which makes the Myo gesture-sending armband, has raised another $120 million from Intel Capital, Amazon Alexa Fund and others.
VentureBeat notes that this is the first fundraising round since 2013, which yielded $20 million. Intel Capital led that round, too.
The Myo band is a particularly interesting product. It fits around your forearm and senses — and responds to — electrical impulses associated with movement. Because it doesn’t respond to movement itself, the Myo has potential applications in the field of prosthetics.
The presence of the Amazon Alexa Fund in this Series B round is worth noting. Amazon recently said it would put up $100 million to fund voice response technology. To date, Thalmic’s products haven’t included voice capabilities; it would be a good bet to expect that a future product will.
