Wearables as Connected Devices

October 13, 2013 By Dan Rosenbaum

In among all the chatter about wristwear, sportswear, and fashion, it’s a good thing to remember that wearable tech is, at its core, all about connecting devices. And connected devices are right in Cisco’s wheelhouse.

Cisco’s been talking for a while about the “Internet of Everything,” where all devices — and they do mean all — talk to each other. They’ve posted a very interesting high-concept guest blog post by Thomas Van Manen, a technology analyst at VINT, the Sogeti Trendlab.

Here’s the nub of the posting:

  • The hardware’s not ready yet
  • Even if the hardware were ready, the software doesn’t know how to differentiate between what information the wearer wants and when
  • Developers should be thinking more about the service that wearable tech delivers and less about the device. Think “why,” not “what.”

Provocative stuff.
